Team Sunweb spent the day in the bunch protecting Georg Preidler and his Mountains jersey, and worked to get him safely to the finish. The breakaway had a solid gap which they maintained throughout the race and to the finish line. Johannes Fröhlinger took 20th place in the sprint from the peloton. Warren Barguil and Sam Oomen finished 12th and 15th in the GC respectively. After an excellent display of team work, Georg finishes the race as winner of the Mountains classification.
Georg Preidler said: “I didn’t feel so good coming into today’s stage but towards the end I started to feel better. My focus was to finish the race safely in the weather conditions so that I could take home the mountains jersey. I’ve had a really good week of racing and I am happy with where my legs are at coming out of the winter training season. I’m looking forward to the next race with the team.”
Team coach Aike Visbeek said: “Today we missed the break, nobody would let us go because we had a couple of riders high up in the GC. It looked like it was going to be a bunch sprint today and with the weather conditions our main focus was to finish the race safely. It was a good first race for the team and the level of the riders is high coming out of the winter training season. We have made some good steps in positioning and communication. It’s great that Georg has won the mountains jersey and it was a brilliant effort from both him and the team.”
